Membership is open to any individual who is:
- Currently responsible for the management of volunteers.
- A graduate of, or participant in, a recognized program of studies of management of volunteers.
- Experienced in management of volunteers and wishing to maintain or develop professional contacts.
ADVR members are:
- Professional Directors of Volunteers with at least one full year of experience in managing volunteers, are graduates of a recognized program of studies in the management of volunteers and are currently responsible for volunteers.
- Professional Directors in training with less than one full year of experience managing volunteers, are participants in a recognized program of studies in the management of volunteers and are currently responsible for volunteers.
- Students who are in a post-secondary institution.
- Retired members who are no longer working in the field.
- Community members who are not responsible for the management of volunteers but are interested in the profession of volunteer management.
- Associate members are from professional associations with values compatible with those of ADVR.
